I've done full paints on the characters but Shaun and I decided that cells looked better. However, I'm not happy with my own cell shading in this piece, so I've gone ahead and let Shaun complete the characters himself. This is just showing my own take on the cells.
All crits welcomed by anyone who sees this, mainly on the character colouring. Cheers.

EDIT: Brightened the bamboo in the background closer to the top of the scene; hopefully it makes the image pop a little more.
I've also put the character paints up with the cells as a comparison and moved it from scraps.
Thanks to everyone that gave suggestions and pushed me to take that final (even if small) step to completion, you guys know who you are, give yourselves a pat on the back.
I would personally lighten up the bamboo forest in the background to pop the ninja out on (as well as samurai). Otherwise the ninja is lost and the action isn't as loud as it could be.
Not so happy with the cells. Like I said in the initial post, Shaun is going to be colouring the characters. I'll post his up instead, and then the full paints later on.
Dude, this is actually a really nice picture, totally doesn't belong in scraps. If you want a suggestion, I would say do what kajus said, but add a lighter shaded gradient coming from above, and have it end near the middle of the trees.
